Democracy will not win until there is accountability

Pavel Latushka: Deputy Head of the United Transitional Cabinet of Belarus, Head of the National Anti-Crisis Management, Ambassador

..."I am not ready to recognize Lukashenko. This is the person who committed a crime, gave the order to kill peaceful Belarusians, who tortures Belarusians in Belarusian prisons, who destroys our statehood and our independence. I will never agree to recognize him as the President of Belarus", — said Deputy Head of the United Transitional Cabinet of Belarus, Head of the National Anti-Crisis Management Pavel Latushka during the third conference "New Belarus".

The goal of the conference is a strategy for the election campaign for the presidential elections in Belarus in 2025, identifying the problems of society and finding ways to solve them together. Several hundred people are taking part in the conference: Belarusian politicians, activists, public figures and representatives of civil society, as well as President-elect Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya and representatives of the Foreign Ministries of Poland, Estonia, Lithuania, the USA, Ukraine and other countries.

"This conference is special: next year Lukashenko is planning his 'reappointment'. It is extremely important for us to develop a common strategy that will complicate his plans, but will not allow for further repression. We need to acknowledge and openly discuss our problems with Belarusians and among ourselves.

We have achieved a lot over the years: we have built truly democratic institutions for Belarus, such as the President-elect, the United Transitional Cabinet and the Coordination Council — an alternative to the Lukashenko’s regime and its dictatorial system. We will continue our work and strengthen our institutions.

It is important for the regime to show that 2020 is an accident. Our task is to show that this is not an accident. Boycott allows the system to mobilize its supporters and falsify the elections — and thus does not strain the system, but allows the elections to be held calmly. After all, there is nothing better for a dictatorship than silence and inactivity.

It is important for us to reach beyond the core of our supporters. For people who doubt, the 'against all' option will be the closest, because Lukashenko has simply gotten on many people's nerves for 30 years, although they do not see an alternative", — Pavel Latushka noted.

During the event, the strategy for the 2025 elections will be discussed, the "Platform 2025" document, the protocol of interaction between the Office of Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya-the United Transitional Cabinet-the Coordination Council will be adopted. It is planned to adopt declarations on foreign policy priorities and on the responsibility of the Lukashenko regime, as well as on the restoration of justice. Two declarations were initiated by Pavel Latushko's team.

Pavel Latushka asked partners to use tools to hold Lukashenko accountable.
