Exclusion of “Belteleradiocompany” from the European Broadcasting Union: what has been done and how every Belarusian can help
The NAM, together with the Belarusian Cultural Solidarity Foundation, continues to work on excluding the Belarusian Television and Radio Company (BTRC) from the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). Channels of the BTRC are sources of propaganda, lies and incitement to hatred that spreads on the Belarusians every day.
1) We sent additional inquiries to the EBU, where we emphasized the growing repressions against freedom of speech in Belarus, in particular, on the illegal sentences to journalists Katerina Andreeva and Darya Chultsova. EBU CEO Noel Curran has already made a statement about the case: “We are extremely concerned that journalists are being imprisoned simply for doing their job of providing people with access to independent news and information.”
2) Representatives of the Belarusian diaspora in European countries have actively joined the initiative. They reached out to local EBU TV and radio companies as well as local politicians.
3) The Swedish authorities launched a petition in the European Parliament demanding to stop the membership of BTRC in the EBU.
4) The head of the NAM Pavel Latushka emphasized the issue of excluding BTRC from the EBU at a meeting with deputies of the Polish and European parliaments. They supported the initiative and are ready to get involved in its promotion.
Why is it so important? The exclusion from the EBU will deprive the mouthpiece of the regime, prestige, money from the BTRC and will also hit the pride of propagandists. This will be another demonstration that Lukashenka’s regime is illegitimate on the international level.
