European Cycling Championships to be held in Minsk cancelled

The European Cycling Championships, which were to be held in Minsk, have been cancelled. This is another step towards isolating the criminal regime

An emergency meeting of the European Cycling Union (UEC) was held today. It was decided to cancel the European Championship in cycling in Minsk. The tournament was scheduled for June 23−27.

Belarusian Sports Solidarity Foundation and the NAM welcome the UEC decision. Belarus cannot host any major international tournaments while people are tortured in prisons and the country is in the hands of the terrorist regime.

Vadim Krivosheev, responsible for youth policy and sport at the NAM, commented on the decision of the European Cycling Union:

— The campaign to cancel the European Championships lasted four months. During this time, the Sports Solidarity Fund together with the NAM, human rights organisations and with the support of the diaspora did a lot of work to convince the UEC leadership to cancel the tournament. Special thanks to Viola von Cramon-Taubadel and the Members of the European Parliament who signed an appeal to the UEC to support the postponement of the championship.

We thank the national federations of Lithuania and Switzerland, as well as the Danish NOC, which, in the early stages of the campaign, offered the velodromes of their countries as an alternative venue. We thank the federations of Germany, the Netherlands, Great Britain and Lithuania for their principled stance and refusal to participate if the tournament had been held in Minsk.

I am confident that the consolidated support of Belarusian civil society by international political and public structures will help rid the continent of Lukashenka’s terrorist regime.
