The NAM urges Norway to strengthen EU sectoral sanctions

Minister of Trade, Industry and Fisheries of Norway Iselin Nyubo responded to the letter of the National Anti-Crisis Management for Cooperation between Yara and Belaruskali. The main thing:

  • "I share your assessment of the flagrant human rights violations committed by the Belarusian authorities. The situation requires constant international attention, and the Norwegian government will make its contribution to ensure that events in Belarus occupy an important place on the international agenda";

  • "Yara's board of directors and management are responsible for the company’s operations in Belarus. The state is not represented on Yara’s board of directors — neither by civil servants nor politicians";

  • "Nevertheless, Norway expects that all companies in which the state has a stake will follow the principles of responsible business conduct and will work to protect human rights and labor rights, not only at home, but also in partner companies";

  • "The Department of Trade, Industry and Fisheries is in dialogue with Yara on this and other issues. Yara also maintains a close dialogue with the Foreign Office regarding the current difficult situation. We would advise you to direct any questions directly to the company."

The NAM believes that the best demonstration of the solidarity of the Norwegian government with the Belarusian people is to get rid the country’s Ministry of Trade and Industry of the largest stake in Yara. From a block of shares in a company that pays dividends from transactions with an international terrorist.

Also, the National Anti-Crisis Management continues to urge the Norwegian government not only to join the sectoral EU sanctions, but to strengthen them by suspending cooperation between Yara and the Belarusian illegitimate government. If the government of the country really has no influence on the company, then the Norwegians can do differently: introduce a ban on the import of Belarusian potash fertilizers. The NAM has already sent a corresponding proposal to the Minister of Trade, Industry and Fisheries of Norway.

It is important to understand: the money Norway spends on potash fertilizers goes to repressions against Belarusians.
